A few weeks ago my wife and I were walking in the park when we noticed a couple that appeared to be hugging a eucalyptus tree (snow gum, E. gunnii). Anyway we stopped to look and the young lady explained what she was doing – listening to the sap rising in the tree. Needless to say we both gave it a go and it was quite amazing. I don’t know how long this phenomenon goes on for but if you are passing these particular eucalyptus trees there’s no harm in giving it a go – just put your ear to the tree and see what strange looks you get from passers by, then enlighten them to what’s happening right under their noses (or ears).
