February in the Park

Just noticed some pussy willows whilst out for a walk in the park today. These are just by the Thrive pavilion near the bowling green. They are the male flowers on a Goat willow or Great sallow and should turn bright yellow over the coming weeks.

Since the start of March the pussy willow catkins have been changing a few at a time and the bees have been busy visiting them.

By mid March the whole tree is ablaze with mature catkins and on a glorious sunny day they are buzzing with visitors. The ground is awash with spent flowers and I don’t suppose it will be that long before this amazing display comes to an end.
